The Library is a 2D narrative adventure game. The story follows Ollie who sets out to find the Oxfus’s Library, an enchanted library that sanctions lost souls who can’t make it to the afterlife until their story is told. While many ventures away from the library, Ollie hopes to become a library guardian. A goal that was set at a young age as his mother told him stories of her time being a guardian. But will Ollie be up for the gruelling burdens that come with being a guardian? The vast responsibilities and tasks to get the sprites onto their next chapter? Only time will tell…

Statement of Design Intent:

My initial intent was to create a game in which the player (playing as Ollie) must help the spirits (NPCs) find out their defining moment/memory/event in life so they can move on to the afterlife. Players would venture through the enchanted library as they find and cultivate objects,  get over obstacles and traps, and occasionally protect the spirit from creatures like book worms.

Some running game inspiration included Oxenfree (dialogue/finding clues aspect), Unpacked (puzzle aspect), Hollow Knight (combat aspect), and Night in the Woods (layout aspect).

However, this idea was very vast and needed time to fully develop/render. Therefore, I decided to focus on how I would want my game to look upon starting it. I put more time into the aesthetics, art and general “vibe” of the game, with a little mechanical exploration in creating and animating a functional character (Ollie). I also wanted some interaction for interest, so I made the character catch fireflies for fun (no scoring, simply the interaction).
